Faster PC’s with only a few hardware updates

Stuck with a old laptop or do you have a new laptop which isn’t to par with modern standards, well you have come top the right place. WisePCAdvise will be guiding you to a faster, better computer experience.

So, lets start with the hard drive you may have…

Laptops are usually supplied with slow HDD’s which don’t perform as good as SSD’s. Companies like dell in their inspiron series, use 5400 rpm HDD’s which may result in slow and sluggish performances which you would not expect from spending upwards of $600. Spending an extra $100 won’t hurt but might make a ton of difference. Therefore, I would strongly recommend people going on YouTube, searching disassembly video’s of your laptop and just replacing your hardrive. A hardrive I strongly recommend is a SSD , specifically a Samsung EVO 850 which is $139 for 250 GB with a read speed of  550 MB/s. That’s much faster than your HDD drive which will make a huge difference in your performance. (There is a at the bottom of this article)

WARNING!!! Please don’t go and buy just any SSD. The best thing to do is to go to CURICAL.com to check your system compatibility with SSD. Click below to find out if your Laptop is compatible with

You have replaced you hardrive, but your laptop is still a little slower that you would like it to be. There is another thing you can do, which is upgrading the OS.

Upgrading to windows 8 will boost your speed when using the OS. Windows 8 may not have the best reputation for easy use but as long as you stay out of the metro UI (I think they call it just “tiles” now but I like the words metro UI) its just like windows 7 but much faster.

Alright, so you have upgraded your OS and your SSD but your laptop is still not as fast as you would like it to be. Well, there is one thing you can do which is replace the RAM

So, how does replacing the RAM help the computer become faster ? Read and write speeds of older models of RAM are considerably lower as new and modern RAM’s. Still don’t get how it helps. Lets put it this way, using a DDR 4 type of RAM than a DDR3 type of RAM can potentially increase the computers speed up to 25%. So, as you see the benefit of replacing your old RAM with a new one, lets have some do’s and don’t of how to get a new RAM.

DON’T…..

  • go and buy the RAM without checking the motherboard compatibility
  • go and buy a desktop grade RAM as they are too big to fit in a laptop
  • buy used RAM. Buying new one’s are reliable and come with warranty
  • open your laptop if it under warranty. Check with your manufacture first before installing your new RAM. Some companies (like Dell) allow you to install RAM without voiding your Laptops warranty id done properly(Take pictures at each stage to show the company, if something goes wrong in the future, that it wasn’t your fault but theirs)

DO…

  • got to www.Crucial.com to check RAM which is compatible with your system. If you don’t know your model press the “Scan your System” button which will prompt you to download a small file which will help Crucial identify your system. You can even buy your RAM there and in most cases is cheaper than other websites
  • take images when doing this process as this can help you prove that it wasn’t your fault if something goes wrong with your laptop
  • go to a specialist if you don’t like to do it yourself or are not confident enough
